BEING

UBUNTU TALKS

Company website

Ubuntu Talks is a media platform that strives to create positive representations of black bodies in the media. This platform showcases and celebrates blackness by exploring various identities and sharing people’s experiences with the world.

As part of this exploration, Ubuntu Talks presents BEING – a photography series that observes the skin, bodies, and hair of various black individuals in Montreal.

In Hair, the bond that exists between black women and their hair stylist is observed. Hair acts as a sort of bridge that connects these two women.
Skin seeks to open up spaces where we can talk about our skin types as well as the different skincare products that we use.
Finally, Body explores the ways in which control is exercised over our bodies in society.

Vernissage: Thursday, August 31, 5:30 - 10pm

The gallery is open on August 30- September 3 from 2 - 8 pm

Special Panel Discussion

Being: A Skincare Discussion

Though our skin is the body’s largest organ, we often neglect it and fail to care for it properly. Good skin care is more than remembering to wear sunscreen when we are outside in the summer. Instead, it involves what we wash with, moisturize with, and even what we eat.
As part of a visual exhibition called BEING, Ubuntu Talks will be hosting a panel discussion on skincare. Here, we will openly discuss the trials and tribulations that we face when treating and protecting our skin. This is a safe space of sharing and healing; you are invited to share as much as you’re comfortable sharing.

The panelists are women who have experienced skin ailments that many of us are familiar with. However, instead of relying on chemically laden products, they have chosen natural oils and butters. Together, we will cover topics such as confidence, natural skincare and nourishing your skin through your diet.

leslie nikole is a confident up and coming author living in Montréal while longing for Bridgetown. She practices yoga, reads/writes, and curates art from the dinner table to pop up galleries on the regular. Trained at the feet of the women who raised her, she's following a more holistic approach to skincare and general well being, even as far as getting the wheels turning on creating her own natural skincare products.

Kassandra Kernisan is a certified Naturopath, Holistic Health Coach, Kemetic Yoga Instructor (CYT-RYT 200H) and Entrepreneur who has successfully developed and marketed a line of 100% natural, herb-infused skincare and haircare products called Herb ‘n Beauty (formerly Pure Violet Natural Cosmetics). Her ultimate mission is to promote health empowerment.

Naella Gaston is a biology student with a passion for cosmetics and skincare. She was driven to pursue a career in beauty by her enthusiasm for homemade cosmetic products and essential oils. Also a beauty consultant, she customizes foundation and powder to match exact skin tones and skin types. Her mission is to show consumer awareness of ingredients we find in our daily cosmetic products.

This event is free, and the space is wheelchair accessible.
