The History of Sexuality

Sexuality is always wrapped up in structures and systems of power. This new verbatim theatre play by Dane Stewart offers an intimate and radically honest examination of sex and power from a queer perspective. Five students take a graduate seminar studying the work of revolutionary philosopher Michel Foucault. As they argue over issues of sexuality, gender, oppression and free will, these theories begin to rupture and spill out into their own lives. The characters expose the complexities of sexuality as it collides with BDSM, pup play, disability, gender, race, and sex work.

Alissa and Madeleine have their relationship tested under the weight of anxiety and depression. Talia and Darr live the positives and negatives of sex work as their experiences build self-confidence and breed violence. The polyamorous Dom/sub partnership between Craig and Martin exposes the challenges of BDSM power-relationships. And, tying everything together is Professor Marie Dupont, whose omnipotent lectures on truth and power begin to rupture the lives of her students.
