Sapientia

Scapegoat Carnivale

Company website

Written in the 10th century by Hroswitha of Gandersheim, history's first female playwright, Sapientia is a proto-feminist story about a Christian noblewoman who, when faced with religious persecution from the Roman emperor, chooses to martyr her three children. Through divine intervention, the children become immune to physical pain and undergo miraculous bodily transformations.
This grotesquely comic, ecstatic, miracle play, will be directed and conceptually adapted by Mia van Leeuwen as object theatre, a form of puppetry where performers animate found materials (a mirror, an espresso maker, a teacup) to tell a story.

The subject matter is disturbing and deals with triggering material regarding religious extremism, and violence against women and children.
