Hello Darlin' Presents: The Bombadils!
Biography
THE BOMBADILS

The Bombadils are a five-piece ensemble based out of Montréal, Québec. They met in 2009 shortly after beginning their classical and jazz studies in music performance at McGill University. The band shares an eclectic variety of musical interests, which they bring together to create a unique, folk inspired sound. It is their sense of discipline and attention to detail, acquired through their formal experience and training, that helps them create a sound that is at once accessible and virtuosic.

LUKE FRASER

Luke Fraser grew up in Nova Scotia and has been heavily influenced by east-coast music. He brings the sound of the Maritimes to the stage with his dynamic mandolin and tenor banjo playing. After finishing his undergrad at Dalhousie University in Halifax, he moved to Montreal to continue his studies at McGill, where he is completing a master's degree in Classical Guitar performance. Luke has played gigs all over the Maritimes in a Celtic duo with Tristan Legg and continues to do so when he is not playing with The Bombadils.

SARAH FRANK

Fiddler Sarah Frank's past and current teachers include world-renowned fiddlers and violinists: Alasdair Fraser, Laura Risk, Hanneke Cassel, Natalie Haas, Mark Fewer (McGill University, former concertmaster, VSO), and Broderyck Olson (interim concertmaster, ESO). Sarah performs regularly with established Montreal Celtic band, Salty Dog at locations such as Hurley's, McKibbins, and l'Ile Noire. Sarah is also a member of Scottish band, The Nicky Tams in her hometown, Edmonton.

ANH PHUNG

Anh Phung is a classically trained flautist who has branched out to other musical genres. Over the years, she has won numerous awards including 1st place at the Canadian Music Competition and the Galaxie Rising Star Award for two consecutive, among others. She has performed with several orchestras across Canada including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and l’Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec. She now studies jazz performance at McGill with first-call Montreal Celtic Flautist, Dave Gossage, and is involved in a number of musical projects including Thick Blooded (prog rock) and Milton Gates (pop rock).

EVAN STEWART

Bassist Evan Stewart (Edmonton) studies with internationally in-demand jazz bassist, Fraser Hollins. His past teachers include Graham Kidd, as well as John Taylor (Grant MacEwan College, ESO) and Alec Walkington (McGill). Evan has had the honor to share the stage with prominent and award-winning musicians such as Steve Turre (Best Trombone and Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz), Jim Head and Kent Sangster (Juno nomination, Western Canadian Music Award). In 2008, Evan released the CD, Look Both Ways, with Alberta Celtic band, McKeever's Crossing.

NOAM BIERSTONE

Toronto native, Noam Bierstone, percussion, is the recipient of various awards such as the Grand Prize at the 2009 Canadian Music Competition, and 3rd prize at the Standard Life Competition, an international competition hosted by l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.
