Playing Objectives
Presented by: Peter Giser

This workshop is available for actors of all levels of skill and experience, and will focus on how to play objectives in scenes. The objective (what you need in the scene) is an incredibly important element to acting a scene, as it will determine what you need from your scene partner, how you'll try to get it, and also what sort of obstacles you'll be dealing with. Using scenes from modern plays we'll explore how to choose and act out an objective, how this can affect the interpretation and tone of the scene, and how it creates opportunities with your scene partner. The choice of objective and how connected we are to them will usually determine whether a performance makes sense or not, and whether things truly come alive while acting.

One aspect of objectives we will definitely take a look at is the text of the scene, and how this might inform our choice. Making sure we're really saying what we're saying is key to playing an objective, so that the text becomes an expression of a need rather than just the next line in the script. How to specify what each line means and how it relates to the objective will be a primary goal in the workshop.

The workshop will take place in 3-hour sessions over eight weeks, on Mondays between January 6th and March 2nd, 2020. The cost of the entire workshop (24 hours total) is $150, payable in advance. The location will be the Minimain space at Mainline Theatre. Once registration is complete scenes will be assigned in advance so that you will have a chance to read the play prior to our initial work on the scenes.
